Hempel’s Dilemma: Not Only for Physicalism*

چکیده
According to the so-called Hempel’s Dilemma, thesis of physicalism is either false or empty. Our intention in this paper not propose a solution but rather argue as follows: extent that Dilemma applies it equally any theory gives deep-structure and changeable account our experience high-level theories. In particular, we will show also mind–body dualistic The scope turns out be very wide: special case general sceptical argument against theories outside science.

Prospects for timbre physicalism
Timbre is that property of a sound that distinguishes it other than pitch and loudness, for instance the distinctive sound quality of a violin or flute. While the term is obscure, the concept has played an important, implicit role in recent philosophy of sound. Philosophers have debated whether to identify sounds with properties of waves, events, or objects. Many of the intuitive considerations...
متن کاملonly - - not for reproduction
From the perspective of nonlinear science, it is argued that one may accept physicalism and reject substance dualism without being forced into reductionism. This permits a property dualism under which biological and mental phenomena may emerge from intricate positive feedback networks, involving many levels of both the biological and cognitive hierarchies.

متن کاملPhysicalism, Behaviorism and Incompleteness
The content of this paper contains four parts. (1) First, physicalism gives the enlightenments to behaviorism: mind-body identity, objectivity like physics and completeness of reduction. (2) Secondly, there are difficulties which behaviorist could not overcome—both the reduction of the theory and the terms are unreliable, and the strict distinction between introspective method and inter-subject...
متن کاملLoar’s Defence of Physicalism
Brian Loar believes he has refuted all those antiphysicalist arguments that take as their point of departure observations about what is or isn’t conceivable. I argue that there remains an important, popular and plausible-looking form of conceivability argument that Loar has entirely overlooked. Though he may not have realized it, Saul Kripke presents, or comes close to presenting, two fundament...
